How Has Covid-19 Affected Published Academic Research? A Content Analysis of Journal Articles Mentioning the Virus

Abstract Purpose Methods to tackle Covid-19 have been developed by a wave of biomedical research but the pandemic has also influenced many aspects society, generating need for into its consequences, and potentially changing way existing topics are investigated. This article investigates nature this influence on wider academic mission. Design/methodology/approach reports an inductive content analysis 500 randomly selected journal articles mentioning Covid-19, as recorded Dimensions scholarly database 19 March 2021. mentions were coded disease research. Findings Whilst two thirds these about biomedicine (e.g. treatments, vaccines, virology), or health services in response others covered economy, safety, education. In addition, some not stated that had increased decreased value reported changed context which it was conducted. Research limitations The findings relate only influences declared published articles. Practical implications managers funders should consider whether their current procedures effective supporting researchers address evolving demands societies, particularly terms timeliness. Originality/value results show although dominates is more widely disrupting with new challenges.
